Wallabies captain Michael Hooper plans to "come out blazing" in Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup clash with the All Blacks in Sydney to kick off the Rugby Championship.

Hooper is returning from a hamstring injury suffered against Ireland eight weeks ago but says his meticulous rehabilitation program has him ready to go for the first Test against New Zealand.

"I'm going to come out guns blazing," Hooper said.

"I've been lucky to have such a great team there to get me back into this game. I feel really ready and can't wait for tomorrow night."

The Wallabies are well covered for back-row replacements, with fellow specialist openside flanker David Pocock able to slot seamlessly into Hooper's void after starting at No.8 and 2018 Super Rugby champion Pete Samu at the ready on the bench.

Meanwhile All Blacks star Sam Whitelock will on Saturday become the first Kiwi second rower to reach the 100-cap mark and only the eighth New Zealander in any position to attain that milestone, adding extra motivation for the Wallabies rivals.

And Jack Goodhue won the contentious outside centre berth in a near-full strength All Blacks team in what will be just his second Test, seeing off the more accomplished Anton Lienert Brown.

THE HISTORY

Since 1931, New Zealand and Australia have contested the Bledisloe Cup with the former holding the most titles (46). Head-to-head New Zealand have won 98 to Australia's 36 matches and Sydney has been a horror scene for Australian fans the past two years, with the All Blacks running rampant in 42-8 and 54-34 routs before wrapping up series wins in New Zealand.

Two of the Rugby Championship matches count towards the Bledisloe Cup. The other teams in the Rugby Championship with the Wallabies and All Blacks are South Africa and Argentina. For the last two years New Zealand have claimed both the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship. Argentina will be hoping to end their two-year wooden spoon run.

1. The Wallabies showed last year they have the firepower to end the Bledisloe drought. Take away the dreadful first half of the first Test when they were 40-6 down, and 54-6 down after 50 minutes and Michael Cheika's side out-scored the All Blacks 88 points to 53 for the rest of the series, including piling on 45 unanswered points in 44 minutes to finish game one and start game two in the 2-1 series defeat.

2. Cheika's team is better prepared to start the series this season, coming off a high-quality series with world No.2 Ireland in June and a newly-introduced recent "trial" match. The Wallabies also seem to have broken the mental barrier with a drought-breaking victory in the 2018 third Test in Brisbane.

3. Champion flanker David Pocock is back after missing the series last season on sabbatical. The All Blacks are on high alert for the threat his super breakdown work poses to their free-wheeling game and his combination with captain Michael Hooper could prove a party "Pooper" for the world champions.

4. The All Blacks have not been at their imperious best for some time. Their playmaker, two-time world player of the year Beauden Barrett, has had his form and position questioned in recent weeks and skipper Kieran Read is still working his way back following spinal surgery.

5. While the Wallabies have made lightning starts in their past two trans-Tasman Tests, the All Blacks looked vulnerable for long patches in each of their three encounters with France in June, trailing at the break in the opener, only level on the half-hour mark in game three and out-scored in the second half of game two. They needed to rack up a total of 70 second-half points across the series to keep Les Bleus at bay and can't afford to be slow out of the blocks again.

On Saturday up at US Bank Stadium, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings will be matching up in NFL preseason activity.

Jacksonville is coming off a successful season in 2017, posting a 10-6 regular-season record to win the AFC South. The Jags beat the Bills in the Wild Card Round, then took the Divisional Round over the Steelers but missed a Super Bowl bid by losing to the Patriots in the AFC Championship.

In Jacksonville’s first preseason action this season, they fell to the Saints 24-20 by allowing 14 points in the final quarter. The Jaguars’ Cody Kessler led the team in passing with a 14-of-17 line for one TD and zero picks.

Over on the Vikings’ side, they had a solid season as well in 2017, going 13-3 and taking first place in the NFC North. Minnesota won the Divisional Playoff Game against the Saints, but were throttled by the eventual champion Eagles in the NFC Championship.

Minnesota put up lots of offense in their first preseason outing against the Broncos, winning 42-28. Trevor Siemian logged a nice game with 165 yards and two TDs, while Kirk Cousins was 4-for-4 with 42 yards and one TD.

The Jags are 5-1 ATS in their last six games on field turf and 6-2 ATS in their last eight Saturday games. Jacksonville is also 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games and the under is 4-1 in their last five games on turf.

Meanwhile, the Vikings are 6-2 ATS in their last eight Saturday games and 42-19 ATS in their last 61 games overall. Minnesota is also 35-16 ATS in their last 51 games on turf and 34-16-1 in their last 51 home games.

If this were the regular season, a Jags-Vikes matchup would be must-see television. As it stands now however, we’ll get lots of vanilla formations and lower-depth-chart players on the field for the most part. I like what I’ve seen so far from the Vikings offense, and I’ll take Minnesota for the cover in what should be a solid preseason game.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons face off in week 2 NFL preseason action from Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to get back on track after losing their preseason opener against Houston by a final score of 17-10. Chad Henne saw the bulk of the work under center, going 8 for 14 passing with 91 yards and a touchdown that was cancelled out by an interception. Damien Williams led the Chiefs in rushing with 20 rushing yards while Kerwynn Williams and Darrel Williams each had a team-high 6 carries. Demarcus Robinson led the Chiefs receivers with 48 receiving yards and a touchdown while Alex Ellis caught a team high 4 passes in the losing effort. Defensively, Ben Niemann led the Chiefs with 4 tackles while the Chiefs defense as a whole held the Texans’ offense to 272 yards of total offense.

The Atlanta Falcons on the other hand also dropped their preseason opener, but were shut out by the New York Jets by a final score of 17-0. Kurt Benkert led the Falcons with 125 yards passing along with an interception on 9 of 17 passing while Matt Schaub threw for 54 yards on a perfect 9 for 9 passing. Malik Williams led the Falcons’ ground game with 6 carries for a team-high 19 yards while Devin Gray caught a team-high 4 passes for 83 yards and Justin Crawford added 4 receptions of his own. Jonathan Celestin recorded an interception while Demontae Kazee led Atlanta with 9 tackles as the Falcons allowed 253 yards of total offense in the loss.

Kansas City is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games on grass. Atlanta is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games overall and 33-16-2 in their last 51 games on grass. The over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

Neither of these two got off to the start that they wanted to in their respective openers, but despite not getting the win I actually liked what the Chiefs put together on the field. The Falcons held their own against the Jets but just couldn’t get on the board and last time I checked, preseason or not, you need to score points to have a chance at winning games. I’ll take a shot with the Chiefs and the points in a game I see Kansas City winning outright.
